James Joyce builds his characters by creating an elaborate and well descriptive setting. In the first paragraph of “ Eveline”, Eveline describes her house to be a little brown house compared to the new bright read brick house with the shinny roof. With the description of her house compared to another house, it is easy to conclude that her family was not rich but not poor either This is important to character development as you can understand why she has to work two jobs to support just her and her father.
The narration that Joyce uses through most of his short stories is omniscient. By doing this the readers can understand that the characters point of view but do not experience any bias. Another reason why Joyce uses an omniscient narrator is to give the readers the feeling that Dublin is in a bubble and we the readers are seeing it from an outsider’s perspective, which is the same perspective, Joyce saw Dublin in, as he never really lived in Ireland.
The usage of epiphanies is something that Joyce includes in all of his short stories, Usually his stories start with a character starting their journey and as the plot thickens and reaches the climax the character, has had their epiphany and then the story ends. In “Eveline” the rising action is Eveline getting ready to board the boat with Frank, however Eveline realizes she can leave the routine of her life so she leaves Frank to board the boat by himself. After that, the story ends.
Situational Irony is anther component that is prominent Through out Dubliners. Most of the time the irony occurs when the characters have their epiphany. For example in Eveline both the audience and Eveline herself thinks that she will run away with Frank but after hearing the Italian music and having her Epiphany she decides not to leave.
